Šmartinsko lake is located in the direct vicinity of Celje. Its winding coastline and picturesque backdrop make it a particularly appealing hiking destination.

It was created in 1970 and it includes 113 hectares of water area. In addition to its original function as a retention basin, the lake and its environs have become a lively and increasingly popular sports and tourist resort.

The idyllic pristine nature, varied offer, and above all a safe trail to the water invites and impresses all generations of visitors. Numerous hikers, joggers, cyclists, and four-footed friends are on their way to the same destination every day – the Šmartinsko Lake. Boats, kayaks, and paddle boats can be rented for fun on the water. Alternatively, the Queen of the Lake can take visitors on a mini cruise. The bustling aquatic life makes the lake a heaven on Earth for recreational fishing. A temporary golf course and a picnic area are also nearby.

Getting to the lake and around

A safe, well-maintained and clearly indicated path starting at the Church of the Holy Spirit (cerkev Sv. Duha) in Nova vas will take hikers, joggers, and cyclists all the way to the lake. At the lake, the trail forks: to the left, it starts a circular path past the Queen of the Lake boat and a modern children's playground, around one of the arms of the lake, over a pontoon bridge, to the Muzelj boathouse where hikers can rest in the shade of the trees or rent a boat or a kayak. The right branch of the trail leads to a grove perfect for relaxing along the lake shore.

Along the entire path around the lake, there are wooden benches for resting, and info boards telling the story of the lake and its fauna and flora. Visitors may enjoy their own food in the designated picnic areas, or head to one of the catering establishments around the lake. Adrenaline-junkies will appreciate the only zorbing (rolling downhill inside an orb) track in Europe that also includes a bend.
