Slovenia's most successful judoists come from Celje. The credit for the development of the sport and promotion of the city goes to the Judo Club Z'dežele Sankaku Celje and Judo Club Ivo Reya Celje. Both clubs start their work with youngsters and guide them on their way to top results.
Top results are a regular feature for the members of the Judo Club Z'dežele Sankaku Celje. Urška Žolnir won gold at the London Olympics in 2012 and bronze in Athens; Lucija Polavder won bronze at the Olympics in Beijing. Rok Drakšič became the European champion in Budapest in 2013; Tina Trstenjak and Ana Velenšek won bronze at the World Championships in Chelyabinsk; and Petra Nareks is the holder of six European Championships medals.
In 2009, head coach Marjan Fabjan was declared the best coach in Europe by the European Judo Association. Marjan Fabjan, Lucija Polavder, and Urška Žolnir are also the winners of the highest accolade in Slovenian sports – the Bloudek Award.
